It is sized for the AirPods 1st and 2nd generation charging case. Check your model before you order, since the cover is cut to that case.
Does the lid still close with the cover on?

Yes. The front is open, so the lid and hinge area stay free. Open the lid first, then slide the cover on so the silicone does not stretch over a closed case.
Does silicone protect against drops, or is it mainly decorative?

It is both. The soft silicone absorbs light knocks, rubs and scuffs that would mark a bare case. It is not a rugged shell, so a hard drop onto concrete can still get through.
