Hardened high-carbon steel rod that hones and maintains knife edges, with a magnetic rust-attracting feature
- Dull knife edges between sharpenings
- Rust and metal particles on the work surface
- Slipping grip during honing
A few honing strokes before prep keep your edge working between sharpenings
Your knife cuts clean again before the first tomato. The hardened high carbon steel rod realigns the blade between full sharpenings, and the magnet lifts the filings off the counter so prep starts clean.
Hardened steel built to realign your edge

Hardened steel rod
High temperature quenching brings the rod to a hardness of up to 60HRC. That hardness lets it straighten the edge of a knife you use every day. Draw the blade down the steel in short, even strokes and the edge returns to line between full sharpenings.

Finger guard grip
The ABS handle has a finger guard and an anti-fall ring at the pommel. Your fingers stay behind the guard while the blade travels down the steel, so a slip stops at the handle instead of at the edge.

Magnet catches filings
The strong magnet pulls steel particles off the rod and the work surface as you hone. Run it along the counter at the end of prep and the shavings come with it, so the next cut starts on a clean board.
A minute of honing before you start prep
- 1Stand the rod upright
Hold the rod upright on the counter by its ABS handle, with the guard between your fingers and the steel.
- 2Set a steady angle
Rest the heel of the blade against the rod at the angle you use for that knife. Keep the angle the same from heel to tip.
- 3Draw down in light strokes
Pull the blade down the rod in 5 to 8 light strokes per side. Do not press hard. The steel does the work.
- 4Alternate sides
Switch sides after each pass so both edges stay in line.
- 5Wipe and magnet
Wipe the rod dry, run the magnet along the counter, then hang the rod on its ring.
Pick the length that fits your blade and drawer
- 400 mm (10 in), 440 mm (12 in)Overall length
- 256 mm (10 in), 300 mm (12 in)Working length
- 13 mmRound diameter
- 10 x 19 mmOval section
Set beside a chef knife, the 12 inch rod runs longer than the blade.

Questions and answers
Not on its own. The rod realigns an edge that has rolled during use, but it does not remove enough steel to rebuild a blunt blade. Sharpen a badly dull knife on a knife sharpener first, then hone it on the rod between sessions.
The 12 inch round rod measures 440 mm overall with a 300 mm working length, which suits chef knives and longer blades. The 10 inch round is 400 mm overall with a 256 mm working length, a better fit for a shallow drawer or a small counter. Measure the blade you hone most often and pick the rod that gives it a full stroke.
It pulls loose steel particles and rust flakes from the rod and the surface around it. Pass the magnet over the counter after prep to lift the filings. Wipe the rod dry before you hang it up.
Dry your hand and the handle before you start. The finger guard and anti-fall ring keep your fingers off the steel during strokes, but a wet or greasy grip on any steel rod is a slip risk. Wipe the handle first.
Pull-through sharpeners grind metal off the blade on every pass, which wears the edge down over time. Honing removes almost no metal, so a minute on the rod between full sharpenings protects the steel you already have.
Use it on the straight edge of a blade. The scalloped sections of a serrated edge do not meet a straight rod evenly, so use a dedicated tool for those.
